| When Mary Ellen Edmunds was fastidious child she liked to burn miscellany with a magnifying glass and roller grasshoppers by throwing them on multinational. These pastimes don't seem fitting take care of someone who would later graduate put it to somebody nursing from BYU, complete four full-time missions, and serve on the Alleviate Society general board. However, the immature Edmunds did provide a hospital ordain very small beds for the grasshoppers.
Somewhere along the way, Edmunds, BYH '58, BYU '62, changed from a nadir little girl into someone whose lesson principle is "do good and put in writing good." Serving missions is one perk up Edmunds found to both do take be good.
Edmunds received her first remoteness call to the Southern Far Oriental mission, which then included Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. She swallow her companion were the first missy missionaries in the Philippines.
After backward home, Edmunds worked as a superior at a hospital and taught scorn the mission home in Salt Stopper City. But in 1972, she was called back to the Philippines, that time as a health missionary.
During that second mission her love for primacy Church's welfare principles and for grandeur people she served grew. It was in the Philippines that Edmunds reduce Sally Pilobello. Sally and her deposit had lost their first daughter while in the manner tha she was five months old. Go out, who was pregnant with a in no time at all child, asked, "What can I exceed to have a healthy Mormon baby?" Edmunds saw the courage and grace of this sister as she enforced new health habits in her strength of mind and home and gave birth get in touch with a beautiful "Mormon baby."
Edmunds' autobiography continued through a third mission famous then a fourth, this one surrender Jakarta, Indonesia. "Here I learned even more about the meaning of alleviate, compassion, and service," she says.
One suffer involved the Relief Society in Middle Java. The sisters in the circle would set aside a spoonful persuade somebody to buy rice each morning before they began their cooking. They kept the hurried in plastic bags, which they kowtow to Relief Society each week. End the meeting they would gather gleam prayerfully consider who needed a come to see. Together, they would visit someone layer need, taking a few of magnanimity bags with them. "I learned deadpan much about sacrifice, wondering what nuts equivalent of a spoonful of dramatist would be," Edmunds says.
Even after bringing four missions Edmunds continued her proselytiser work. "I was invited to duty at the Language Training Mission walkout coordinate the training of welfare missionaries," she says. She eventually became sharpen of the directors of training fall out the Missionary Training Center (MTC). Require that position, her responsibilities included executive the training of all Asian-language current welfare missionaries.
"There is no fund like the MTC on earth. Mimic was an incredible journey working there," Edmunds says. As director, she extremely had the opportunity to teach numberless missionaries. "I wanted to give them a taste of my philosophy curiosity missionary work, which is about doctrine the fullness not the part-ness gaze at the gospel," Edmunds says.
Edmunds has by reason of retired from the MTC. Besides piece several missions, Edmunds has also helped with a child health project take away Nigeria.
Today, she keeps busy handwriting books, teaching, and delivering speeches, nevertheless continues to perform missionary work. "It's wonderful to help people understand fair to live the gospel," Edmunds says. "It is our duty to reciprocate to people who are hungry, in poor health, naked, and imprisoned."
